If the suits at Sony were worried about the big losses the company reported this week, then perhaps they’ll be cheered by the news that the PlayStation 3 isn’t going to be a drain for much longer. According to Chief Financial Officer Nobuyuki Oneda, the loss-leading console is now 70 per cent cheaper to build than it was when it debuted in 2007.

This was discovered by two researchers Anibal Sacco and Alfredo Ortega from Core Security Technologies. This theft recovery software ships with most of the laptops made by Dell, HP, Lenovo, Gateway, Toshiba, Asus and Panasonic. The LoJack software resides in the BIOS of the host system.

Brain Carpet microelectrodes could help translate thoughts into actions more effectively

Researchers at the University of Utah have developed a new, more precise way of placing microelectrodes on the surface of the brain to enable patients to turn thoughts into action. Led by Bradley Greger, a professor of bioengineering, the “Brain Carpet” as it’s called, represents a “modest advance” in techniques already in use. The Brain Carpet makes use of smaller microelectrodes, and also employs many more than are usually used.

My, how the tables have changed. Over the last week, complaints over Apple’s ban of all Google Voice applications on the App Store have risen to a din as developers and users alike cry foul over the arbitrary and possibly anti-competitive restrictions being imposed by Apple. AT&T, too, has been a target of frequent criticism as many of us believe it too may have also played a part in the decision.

District Court Judge Orders Facebook To Reveal Source Code In Patent Dispute

Facebook’s legal woes just won’t stop coming. Last November a company called Leader Technologies , which makes business communcation tools, filed suit against Facebook alleging that the social network had infringed on a patent that “relates to a method and system for the management and storage of electronic information.” The case is still ongoing, and it sounds like it has some legs — earlier this week Facebook was ordered by a Magistrate Judge from the District of Delaware’s District Court to give Leader Technologies access to its entire source code. As reported at Law360, Facebook has until the end of this week to hand over a hierarchical map of the source, and has until August 21st to share its entire codebase with the company.
