Xbox 360 pips PS3 in Battlefield 1943 race

The Xbox community has picked up the kudos in the Battlefield 1943 race to 43 million kills, unlocking the extra map offered for reching the total within five days, well ahead of the rival PS3 community. EA’s cheeky publicity stunt of pitting the two consoles against each other in the budget BF1943 stakes has certainly aided the game’s popularity – as the race to unlock Coral Sea was lapped up by gamers.
In Depth: Blitz: 3D gaming IS the next generation

Blitz Games has been showing off its ‘proper 3D’ gaming tech at this week’s Develop conference in Brighton, with co-founder Andrew Oliver revealing that the first game to use the tech will be out in August. Blitz’s Oliver also argued in an impassioned presentation that gaming – specifically 3D stereoscopic gaming on home consoles – is going to be the major driver behind the TV industry’s shift to 3D over the coming years.
Canon HF S11 and HF 21 AVCHD camcorders flash more memory in Japanese debut

With Panasonic recently announcing a 240GB camcorder , Canon has deemed this a good time to juice up the storage on its own product line with a pair of updated models. Both the HF 21 and the new flagship HF S11 double their predecessors ‘ integrated memory to 64GB, with the latter also adding in a new night shooting mode and more advanced image stabilization to the mix.
Develop 09: PC game downloads worth $1bn in 2009

It looks like the debate between ‘physical’ media (ie discs) and downloads is set to flare up again this week, with the news that the value of PC game downloads is set to top a BILLION US dollars in 2009. The market for digital downloads last year was $600m according to GfK ChartTrack boss Dorian Bloch, who confidently told a panel discussion at Develop 09 that the value of the PC games download market will easily exceed $1bn in 2009. Bloch credited the rapid growth in game downloads to services such as Valve’s Steam and Direct2Drive.
Cooliris Business Model Surfaces: More Advertising We Actually Like

We don’t talk about Cooliris nearly often enough. The Palo Alto-based company has done a fantastic job in pushing the limits of interactive photo and video browsing with its 3D Wall , a plug-in for Internet Explorer, Safari and Firefox that enables users to enjoy viewing their photos on Flickr or Facebook and their YouTube videos in a rich setting that drips of coolness. Develop 09: LittleBigPlanet dominates Develop awards

Last night saw the annual Develop awards ceremony, in which over 500 games developers gathered in Brighton to honour and recognise each other’s most creative games from the last year. Media Molecule were the stars of the night, with the LittleBigPlanet devs scooping up five prizes for Best New IP, Visual Arts, Technical Achievement, Best New Studio and Best Independent Developer.
